Current Construction Projects

Red Maple Lane Water Main Replacement

As a continuation of the Township’s capital improvement program, existing 6-inch diameter cast iron water mains installed along Red Maple Lane, and a short segment of Lahser Road north of Red Maple, in the 1960s are being replaced by High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) lines equivalent to 8-inch or greater cast iron lines. The scope of work includes replacing the aging water mains, hydrants, valves, and water service lines within the right-of-way, as well as installing new stop boxes.  The construction method selected for the project is pre-chlorinated pipe bursting. Pre-chlorinated pipe bursting is less disruptive than traditional open cut water main replacement. These water system enhancements will replace deteriorating lines installed nearly 60 years ago, provide the residents with a more reliable system and improve water flow. Importantly, the project will be completed prior to start of the Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner’s (OCWRC) project to extend the Luz Drain along Red Maple Lane scheduled in late summer or fall of 2026

Red Maple Lane – Luz Drain Extension

This project will improve drainage in the vicinity of Red Maple Lane, including Maple Road, by extending the Luz Drain. The scope of work includes:

  • The construction of approximately 1,203 feet of 12, 18, and 21 inch reinforced concrete storm drain with associated manholes, catch basins, and other structures.
  • Minor ditching to ensure drainage to the new structures.
  • Regrading the existing gravel surface on Red Maple Lane.

This extension under Chapter 20 of the Drain Code, Public Act No. 40 of 1956, allows the construction of drainage systems, improvements, and maintenance and operation to fall to the Drain Board, via the Oakland County Water Resource Commissioner’s office (OCWRC).  Additionally, the capital costs and maintenance costs will be shared by the Township and the Road Commission of Oakland County.

Vernor Estates Water Main Replacement

As part of the Township’s continuing capital improvement program, existing 6 and 8-inch diameter cast iron water mains in the Vernor Estates Subdivision are being replaced by High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) lines equivalent to 8-inch or greater cast iron lines. The scope of work includes replacing the aging water mains, replacing and adding hydrants and valves, replacing the water service lines within the right-of-way, and installing new stop boxes.  The construction method selected for the project is pre-chlorinated pipe bursting. Pre-chlorinated pipe bursting is less disruptive than traditional open cut water main replacement. These water system enhancements will replace deteriorating lines installed nearly 60 years ago, provide the residents with a more reliable water system, improve water flow, and lessen the chances of water service loss due to emergency water system repairs. Importantly, the project will be completed prior to start of the road SAD project taking place in 2026.

Water Main Replacement

Phase1: September—October 2025
Phase 2: October—December 2025 (accelerated to save resources and reduce risk)

More information about the Vernor Estates Water Main Replacement Project is available here.

Residents may also experience discolored water due to turbulence in the old pipes during the project and air in the plumbing during the switching over of residential water services. If this happens, run the cold water through a faucet until the water is clear. This may take three to five minutes. If you have concerns about lead in your water, view our information on lead services, how to identify if you have lead plumbing, how to reduce your potential exposure to lead, and testing information.
